FUTA follows up delayed compensation for flood-hit Kampala traders
Government promised Shs 20 billion after the Nakivubo floods. Competing lists and confusion in distribution have left genuine small traders outside the process.

Traders whose stock was destroyed when Kampala flooded on 31 October 2025 are still waiting. President Museveni assured a FUTA-led delegation that compensation was not up for debate. The figure publicly attached to that promise was Shs 20 billion.
FUTA compiled names from the buildings that were hit. Kabanda says the federation has written to the responsible ministers, identified the victims, and done what was asked — yet payments have not landed, and other groups have since produced competing lists.
“There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the distribution of the money meant to support traders affected by floods,” Kabanda said. He accused compilers of leaving out genuine small-scale traders who lost goods in the water.
FUTA’s instruction to association leaders is simple: bring advice to the federation’s vetting committee rather than opening parallel processes that delay everybody. The money, once released through the Office of the Prime Minister, should follow a single, fair list.
